14.25" H x 8" diameter
likely early 20th-Century
This hand-thrown stoneware jar is from southern China and dates to the early 20th century. Traditionally used for storing cooking oil, often sesame or peanut, jars like this were a staple in rural households and village markets. Its narrow mouth and thick, high-fired walls made it ideal for preserving contents while withstanding daily use.
The jar features a deeply textured surface from combed or paddle finishing, encircled by incised bands, and finished in an earthy olive-to-brown ash glaze. The irregularities in glaze and form speak to its utilitarian origins and natural wood-fired kiln process, likely in a southern dragon kiln.
Condition:
This vintage oil jar is in very good condition with surface wear and glaze variation consistent with its age and original use. Minor rim chips and small imperfections from the firing process are present, contributing to its authentic, rustic look. The glaze shows rich tonal variation and natural patina throughout. The impressed mark near the shoulder is partially visible under the glaze. The base is worn but stable, with no structural damage or repairs.
