Christofle made this one, and the mark on the reverse says so plainly. It is a large oval serving tray in silverplate, the kind of piece meant to carry a full service to the table and hold the room while it does. A cast border of stylized laurel and beading runs the whole way around, and the scroll handles rise from reeded, leaf-capped mounts set on rosette bosses. Christofle has been the leading name in French silverplate since 1830, and the neoclassical vocabulary here, the laurel, the beadwork, the restrained Empire-revival handles, is exactly the register the house is known for. The oval well is broad and clean, framed by that finely worked rim.

Condition

Bright plate across the well with the soft clouding and hazy patches that come with age and handling, visible in several of the photographs, most of it the kind of surface film that responds to polishing. Light surface scratching runs through the field, ordinary wear from use. The cast laurel-and-bead border is crisp and the detail reads sharply all the way around. The handles and their leaf-capped mounts are clean and well defined. The rim edges and the raised high points of the border are where any plate thinning would show first on a tray like this, so please look closely at those in the images. I am making no claim about re-plating in either direction. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
