The spine tells you everything before you even open it. Dense gilt tooling fills every compartment across five raised bands, a repeating geometric and floral pattern worked with real care into what is almost certainly green goatskin. The boards carry it through: a scrolling vine-and-flower border in gilt runs the full perimeter of both covers, delicate enough to suggest a bookbinder who knew what he was doing. Inside, a woodcut bookplate with Celtic knotwork corners and the Latin motto Suscipiant Montes Pacem places this copy in a country house library at some point in its life. The text is Thomas Hood's comic verse, a fifth edition from Moxon in 1853, but the text is not the point. The binding is.
The leather shows honest age throughout: some wear to the board edges and corners, minor surface scuffing consistent with a well-handled 19th-century binding. The gilt tooling on the spine retains good definition, with expected softening in the most handled areas. The boards are sound and the hinges are firm. The text block shows light foxing, nothing major, and no loose or missing pages. The bookplate is intact. A solid, displayable copy of a fine Victorian binding.
