Leila, a young Jewish woman caught between the Moorish world she was raised in and the advancing Spanish Christian forces, is the heart of one of Bulwer's most ambitious historical romances. Published in London by J. & D.A. Darling in 1850 and illustrated with more than ten steel engravings executed under the supervision of Charles Heath, the leading engraver of the English gift-book era, this is the kind of copy that earns its place on a library shelf twice over: once for what it contains, and once for how it looks getting there. The binding is full leather, blind-stamped in an elaborate geometric pattern with a central diamond lozenge and sunburst roundel, and all three fore-edges carry a repeating Gothic arch tooling in gilt. Inside, the endpapers are a rich red-and-gold peacock marble. The dedication, to the Countess of Blessington, published the year after her death, gives the whole thing an elegiac quality Bulwer almost certainly intended.
The binding is full leather and remains supple, with no cracking or significant dryness. There is tearing at the spine, most pronounced at the lower right corner, with some surface leather loss in that area. The covers are otherwise solid and the joints are holding. The fore-edge gilt tooling is present across all three edges, with wear consistent with age. The text block shows light foxing throughout, as is typical for paper of this period, but no pages appear to be missing and the block is secure. The marbled endpapers are vibrant and intact. An ink inscription appears on the flyleaf but is not legible. Overall a presentable copy with honest wear, displaying well.
