About This Piece

This is a French Louis Philippe commode in figured walnut, the kind of quiet, well-made chest that anchored a 19th-century bedroom without ever showing off. Four graduated drawers, a shaped top drawer riding proud over three below, and a black fossil-limestone top whose pale veining is made of actual shell traces. The flame-figured veneer is book-matched across the front so the grain flows drawer to drawer in a single unbroken sweep, which is the whole point of the style: no carving, no gilt, just the wood doing the work.

Condition

Sold as-is; the photos govern. The commode presents very well from the front, with strong figured-walnut veneer and warm color throughout. The surface has been refinished at some point in its life. It is not the original patina, and the method could not be determined from the piece; it reads as a later worked finish rather than an untouched surface. There is a split with some wood loss and old repair at one rear case corner, which faces the wall in use and is not visible from the front. The drawer interiors and bottoms are pine with honest age, oxidation, and wear; one drawer side shows a fresh pale scuff at the top edge. The three lower drawers have working iron locks with keys present; lock function is untested. The black fossil-limestone top is included and shows overall surface scratching and dulling across the face and light edge wear, consistent with age and use; it is not cracked. Minor knocks, small veneer chips, and edge wear are present at the plinth. Species is assessed as walnut from figure, color, and the base rate for the form; the refinished surface limits confirmation from the face. Date is a construction-based estimate; there is no maker's mark or dated stamp.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.

Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.

All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
