Hele's Select Offices of Private Devotion in full black morocco, an 1833 SPCK edition bound for the pocket and meant to be carried. The boards carry a gilt double-fillet border, the spine is divided by raised bands with gilt rules, and the lettering reads HELE'S DEVOTION. All three edges are gilt. Inside, the analytical table of contents lays out daily offices for the six days of the week, an office for the clergy, and offices for the Lord's Day, penitence, and Holy Communion, opening with preliminary instructions on prayer drawn from scripture. The work is attributed to Richard Hele and was issued by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. A small leather devotional that earns its place on a shelf or a desk.
The binding is sound and the text block firm. The morocco shows wear consistent with age, with rubbing and small losses to the leather at the spine ends, corners, and along the joints, and light scuffing across both boards. The gilt rules and spine lettering remain legible. The gilt edges hold their brightness. Internally the paper is clean with scattered light foxing, most visible on the early leaves, and a pencil notation appears on a flyleaf. A solid, attractive copy of a small prayer book that has clearly been used and kept.
