A French Restoration period commode in flame mahogany with a Belgian dark grey marble top, fitted with a hidden frieze drawer above three graduated long drawers. Pieces like this were made for bourgeois Parisian interiors in the transitional decades between Empire and Louis Philippe, when neoclassical vocabulary softened but cabinetmaking standards remained at their peak. The cast brass lion mask ring pulls draw from antique Roman bronze door-pulls, a motif Napoleon's designers favored that carried into the Restoration era. The carved hairy paw feet are a holdover from the Egyptian-revival taste of the Empire period. Construction throughout is period hand work, including hand-cut dovetails on the drawer corners, single-board oak drawer bottoms, hand-planed interior surfaces, and original workshop chalk marks still visible underneath the drawers.
The commode is in good antique condition with honest wear consistent with age and use. The flame mahogany retains its warm red-brown color and figure throughout, with book-matched grain visible across the drawer fronts and pronounced figure on the side panels. All four drawers slide and function. The cast brass lion mask ring pulls and the brass keyhole escutcheons are replacements rather than original to the piece, sympathetic in style and period-appropriate in form. All pulls are intact and present, with one pull on the third drawer (right side) that swivels but remains fully functional. The marble top is the original Belgian dark grey slab, removable from the case. The top surface shows scratches and light etching across the surface consistent with nearly two centuries of use, and the front edge shows small chips and losses along the corner consistent with age. The drawers retain their original hand-cut dovetails, single-board oak bottoms, and hand-planed oak side panels throughout the interiors, with original workshop chalk marks still visible on the undersides. The back is original planked board construction. A small veneer joint is visible on one drawer front but remains stable. The side panel shows minor chips and small losses to the wood consistent with age. Minor wear is also visible at the bottom edge of the front plinth above the front paw foot. There is no key, and the locks are not currently functional. The surface has been cleaned and waxed to maintain the patina. Light surface wear throughout consistent with nearly two centuries of handling.
