This French circular photograph frame is one of the more complete examples of the type I've brought back from this trip. The ground is parquetry-veneered wood in a deep reddish-brown consistent with kingwood, laid in a herringbone chevron pattern, and the ormolu mounts cover every expected surface of the Louis XVI revival vocabulary: a ribbon-tied bow-and-flower crest at the arch, a beaded oval surround for the circular aperture, a central bow knot above a swagged rose garland descending to a pair of neoclassical urn-and-pedestal mounts, and a rosette medallion at the base. The outer border is a continuous cast leaf-and-berry strip. Paris, circa 1890.

Condition

The frame is in good antique condition overall. The ormolu mounts retain good gilding throughout with honest age-related oxidation and patina, most visible in the recesses of the cast garlands and the base rosette. The parquetry wood ground is intact with no lifting or losses visible. The green fabric backing shows wear, scuffing, and minor losses consistent with age and use. The original glass is present but has bubbling or chipping along the edge of the oval, visible when examined closely. The glass does not affect the display face of the aperture. The easel strut functions and the frame stands securely.
