A timber chalet with an upper balcony sits beside a track, a woman in a red skirt walking away from it, and a stream breaks white over rocks below peaks going soft in cloud. I like how much sky the painter gave himself. The clouds are built up in thick, creamy passages that catch warm light, and that is where the picture is at its best. Unsigned, as decorative Alpine views of this kind usually are, and offered as unidentified.

Artist
Unidentified
Signature
Unsigned on the face. Unsigned is usual for decorative Alpine landscapes of this type, many of which were painted for the trade rather than for exhibition. The reverse is sealed and was not examined.
Medium
Oil on board
Subject
Alpine landscape with a timber chalet, a figure on a path, a stream over rocks, and mountains under a cloudy sky
Origin
Continental European, likely German
Age
Late 19th or early 20th century, estimated on style and frame. The reverse is sealed, so construction evidence was not available to narrow it.
Panel Size
18.5 in. W x 12.5 in. H
Frame Size
22.5 in. W x 16.25 in. H
Format
Horizontal rectangle
Frame
Antique gilt composition frame in a Rococo Revival profile, with floral and scroll corners and a gilt sight edge. Not confirmed as original to the painting.
School or Movement
Romanticism. A movement that ran through much of the 19th century and put emotion and the force of nature ahead of the polished precision of academic painting. Mountains, storms, and big skies were favourite subjects, and the Alps became a standard setting. By the later 19th century the style had a large decorative branch, with chalets, streams, and peaks painted for the growing market in pictures for the home. This work sits in that branch.
Support
Rigid board. The reverse is closed with a later paper backing and tape and was not opened.

The paint surface carries a thick, glossy varnish that photographs with heavy glare and gives the surface a slightly uneven, raised look in places. Fine craquelure is visible across the sky. No tears, punctures, or flaking were seen in the photographs. The reverse is closed with a later paper backing and tape and was not opened, so the board edges, any labels or inscriptions, and the condition of the back could not be examined. Previous cleaning, retouching, or overpainting could not be ruled in or out, and the work has not been examined under ultraviolet light.

The frame shows wear consistent with age. The gilt is rubbed through to red bole in areas, with small losses to the composition ornament and dirt settled into the recesses. It is sound as photographed. It is not confirmed as original to the painting.
