A lady tunes a guitar in a candlelit Spanish interior while two gentlemen look on, a third sits at her side, and an attendant at far left keeps a monkey on his shoulder. The plate credits G. S. Newton as painter and C. G. Lewis as engraver, and notes that the original hung in the collection of the Duke of Bedford at Woburn Abbey. The cross-hatching is dense and fine, and the satin gown catches nearly all the light in the room.

Artist

Signature
Unsigned. Lettered in the plate: "G. S. Newton, R.A. Pinxt" lower left, "C. G. Lewis, Sculpt" lower right

Engraving on paper, framed behind glass
Subject
The Prince of Spain's Visit to Catalina, a musical scene in a 17th century Spanish interior
Inscription
Title lettered below the image, followed by "From the picture in the collection of His Grace the Duke of Bedford, Woburn Abbey"
Origin
Likely English
Age
19th century, likely 1830s to 1850s on the style of engraving. No publisher imprint or date is visible
Frame Size
11.5 in. W x 9.75 in. H
Format
Horizontal rectangle
Frame
Black frame with a gilt composition inner slip, hardboard backing, and wire hanger. Later frame, not original to the print

Antique condition consistent with age. The print is framed behind glass and has not been examined out of the frame. The paper shows overall toning and scattered brown foxing in the margins, with a faint stain along the lower margin near the title lettering. The engraved image itself is crisp and clear through the glass. There are a few specks on or under the glass.

The frame shows wear to the gilt slip, including darkening and small losses along the lower edge, and a small chip to the black finish at the upper left corner. The backing is hardboard with paper tape and a twisted wire hanger, consistent with a 20th century framing.
