A fox, a pack of hounds in full run, and a field of riders in scarlet, all woven on a Jacquard loom in silk thread rather than painted or printed. Thomas Stevens of Coventry made these pictures in the late Victorian years, and Full Cry is the middle scene of a three-part hunt set that begins with The Meet and ends with The Death. Look for the lady in the dark habit, riding sidesaddle near the front of the field.

Artist
By Thomas Stevens, English, 1828 to 1888. A Coventry silk manufacturer who adapted the Jacquard loom to weave pictures, starting with bookmarks in the early 1860s and moving on to the framed scenes that took his name. His Stevengraph Works kept producing after his death until about 1940.

Notes
Full Cry is the middle scene of a three-part Stevens hunt set, between The Meet and The Death

The silk is in good condition for its age. The colors are strong and the weave looks intact, with no visible loss or fraying. There is a faint tide-line mark in the upper right of the silk, near the hill and farmhouse. The card mount is evenly toned with scattered foxing and a few darker spots across the lower margin.

The black frame shows small edge wear and a few light dings along the top. The picture is glazed, with no breaks visible in the glass. The paper backing is old and carries a small tear at the top corner. The braided hanging cord is intact.

Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
