A St. Bernard in profile, mahogany and white against a plain dark ground, with just the tip of a pink tongue showing. Portraits of favorite dogs were a steady trade for painters in the decades around 1900, and this one has the unfussy directness of the type: no landscape, no props, only the dog. The canvas carries a Winsor & Newton School of Art Canvas stamp on the reverse. It is signed, though I can't read the name with confidence.

Artist
Unidentified. Bearing a signature that I cannot read with confidence.
Signature
Signed in the lower left in two lines, the first beginning "L." and possibly ending in "S", the second possibly a date. Not confirmed.
Medium
Oil on canvas
Subject
Portrait of a St. Bernard dog in profile
Origin
United Kingdom, on the evidence of the London canvas stamp
Age
Late 19th to early 20th century
Canvas Size
7 in. W x 9 in. H
Frame Size
11.5 in. W x 13.5 in. H
Format
Rectangular, portrait orientation
Frame
Gilt frame with applied foliate corner ornament, plain gilt liner, and beaded sight edge. Not confirmed original to the painting.
Style
Naturalistic animal portrait
Support
Original canvas, stamped on the reverse "Winsor & Newton's School of Art Canvas, Rathbone Place, London W." Mounted on newer wooden supports.

Original canvas, not relined, with no retouching or inpainting noted on examination. The paint surface is dark and slightly matte, as you would expect with this ground. I haven't described the varnish because I can't say what has been applied to it over the years. The reverse shows ordinary age toning, and the canvas stamp is clear. The painting sits on newer wooden supports, so the original stretcher is not present.

The frame has a loss to the ornamented bottom edge where the gilt and composition have come away, exposing a pale layer beneath. There is cracking in several of the corner ornaments, all firmly attached with nothing loose. Otherwise the gilt shows ordinary wear. The hanging hardware on the reverse is newer.
