Plate 46 from Rudolf Ackermann's Views of Country Seats, this hand-colored engraving depicts Fulford House near Dunsford in Devon, seat of one of England's oldest continuously occupied gentry estates. The Fulford family has held this land for over 800 years, and the house seen here across its ornamental water was drawn by John Gendall during his years as chief draughtsman and manager for Ackermann's London publishing house, the most prestigious print publisher of the Regency period. Gendall produced the country house plates for the Repository of Arts between 1819 and 1827, with the collected views published as Views of Country Seats in 1830. The composition follows the classic prospect formula of the period: house centered across water, framed by mature trees, with hand-applied watercolor washes in muted greens and ochres giving warmth to what the engraved line alone could not.
The print is in good antique condition consistent with its age. The paper shows overall toning and light foxing in the margins, as expected for paper of this period. The hand-coloring in the image area is intact with no visible losses. No tears or damage to the image area are apparent. The ebonized frame with gilt bead inner is presentable with general wear to the finish along the edges. There is one specific loss at the lower left corner where a section of the ebonized molding has broken away, exposing raw wood beneath; this does not affect the print or glazing. Additional smaller losses to the ebonized finish are visible along the lower rail. The verso carries the label of H. & R. Dahne, Picture Framers, 2 Richmond Terrace, Clifton, Bristol, consistent with framing in the 1960s to early 1970s.
