This antique English biscuit barrel dates to the late Victorian to early Edwardian period and is made in silver plate with a decorative mesh exterior. The piece features classic lion mask ring handles and a shield cartouche at the front, a detail often reserved for pieces made for the dining table. The interior was originally fitted with a removable glass liner, which is no longer present. The triangular metal cradle inside supported the liner and kept it safely suspended within the mesh. Biscuit barrels like this one were used to store and present biscuits or small baked treats at the table, bringing a sense of formality and charm to afternoon tea. Today it also works beautifully as a decorative accent for English Country House, lodge, study, or Ralph Lauren inspired styling. It can be used for flowers, a small potted plant, utensils, rolled linen napkins, or simply as a sculptural shelf piece.

Condition:

This biscuit barrel shows visible age throughout. The silver-plated mesh body has areas of oxidation, tarnish, and small patches of surface rust. The rim and footed base show plating loss, darkening, and mottling. The lid shows heavy patina and discoloration from age. The interior insert is missing, and the inner metal cradle shows tarnish and wear. The piece remains structurally sound and rests evenly on its ball feet. All wear is consistent with age and adds to the authentic antique character that makes it visually appealing in decorative styling.
