This exceptional pair of Edwardian sterling silver and genuine tortoiseshell card or menu holders was crafted in Birmingham around 1900. Designed for formal table settings and elegant writing desks, these pieces reflect the refined entertaining traditions of the English country house. Each holder features a warm tortoiseshell panel made from true Hawksbill shell that glows beautifully when lit from behind, paired with a weighted sterling silver base hallmarked with the Lion Passant for sterling quality, the Birmingham anchor and the maker’s mark attributed to Henry Unger and Co, a firm known for luxury desk accessories.
One holder displays a silver inlaid sporting dog, likely a setter or pointer in classic field stance, a motif closely associated with Edwardian sporting culture. The second shows a silver boar’s head cartouche, a heraldic symbol traditionally representing courage and loyalty. Together they tell a distinctly English story of estate life and gentlemen’s club elegance. Perfect for place cards while hosting, menus for intimate dinners or as a refined business card holder on a desk, this pair adds a timeless heritage touch to any space.
Condition:
Both holders are in very good antique condition with age appropriate wear. The genuine tortoiseshell panels show natural variation in tone with light surface marks and a few tiny edge nibbles from age. The sterling silver bases show faint scratches, small dimples and gentle rubbing consistent with handling over time. The hallmarks are partially worn but remain identifiable. The silver dog and boar’s head motifs are secure and well defined. Both pieces stand straight, sit flat and present beautifully.
