Oil on canvas, on stretchers
This early 20th-century oil on canvas is a finely painted study after Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779), one of France’s most celebrated still-life painters. Inscribed “d’après Chardin” on the reverse, the work reflects the quiet elegance and meditative beauty for which Chardin is best known.
The composition centers on a luminous silver goblet, accompanied by ripe peaches and a cluster of grapes - subjects Chardin returned to throughout his career. Set against a dark, restrained background, the fruit and glass glow softly in the foreground, capturing the master’s characteristic simplicity and refinement.
Works like this were often created by artists or students as studies in homage to Chardin during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when his reputation enjoyed a strong revival. The canvas bears a French supplier’s stamp (E. Picart), further suggesting a Parisian origin.
Condition:
The painting shows light surface discoloration to the varnish with areas of craquelure consistent with age. There are minor stains and light edge wear to the canvas, but the overall structure remains stable and sound. No significant paint losses or tears are present.
