Two W. S. Coleman titles bound as one: Our Woodlands, Heaths, and Hedges (1859) and British Butterflies (1860), both published by Routledge and both illustrated by the author. Coleman cross-references the first book on the title page of the second, which tells you exactly how this volume came to be: someone recognized these as companion pieces and had them bound together, which was common practice and good judgment. Coleman is an interesting figure to own, a Member of the Entomological Society of London who went on to become one of the more significant decorative artists of the Victorian period, designing for Minton among others. The butterfly frontispiece alone is worth the price of admission, a full-page engraved plate of native British species drawn from life by the author himself.

Condition

The binding carries honest wear throughout. The red leather spine is heavily rubbed, with the surface color largely worn away across much of its length and the gilt tooling on the spine panels partially legible. The green title label is intact and fully readable. The cloth boards are worn at the hinges and corners, the nap rubbed flat in areas, with the leather corner pieces present and intact. The marbled page edges survive in good color, the red, green, and cream combed pattern still clearly visible. Both text blocks are the strength of this copy: pages throughout are clean and crisp, free of foxing, with the wood-engraved illustrations sharp throughout. The butterfly frontispiece plate is present and intact. The binding is worn but holding; the contents of both texts are sound. A Good copy, carried by clean interiors, an attractive frontispiece, and the appealing fact of two companion volumes sharing one binding.
