Deep blue cloth with a color plate of the cathedral pasted directly onto the front board, which is exactly how Raphael Tuck built books in the 1930s. Written by the Dean of Chichester himself and published in 1933 with a foreword by George Bell, the bishop who became the most significant English ally of the German Confessing Church and who is buried in the building this book describes. Sixteen photographic plates inside, the crypt and the presbytery among them. Someone gave this to their mother for a birthday in August 1942 and signed it from your loving little Nipper, the one and only. That inscription is the best thing in it.

The blue cloth is deep and unfaded, and the gilt titling to both board and spine remains sharp and fully legible. Light wear at the spine ends and to the corners, with slight fraying at the head of the front joint. The mounted color plate on the front board is intact and firmly adhered, showing a few faint spots and light surface creasing consistent with a paper onlay of this age.

Internally the binding is tight and square. Foxing to the title page and scattered light spotting through the front matter and margins, heavier on the title leaf than elsewhere. Endpapers are toned, with faint offsetting in the front hinge area. The text block itself is clean and free of underlining or marginalia. All 80 pages present, all 16 plates present. Fore-edge untrimmed as issued. No dust jacket, and none was called for at this price point in 1933.

We describe the condition of each piece as accurately as possible in the listing. If you have specific questions about a piece before purchasing, please reach out. We are always happy to provide additional photos or details.

Colors may appear slightly different on screen due to monitor settings and photography lighting. We do our best to represent each item accurately.

Descriptions, dates, attributions, materials, and measurements are provided in good faith and reflect our best assessment based on research, physical examination, and the information available to us.
