A small British genre scene showing a street sweeper boy and his faithful little dog beside a broom. The warm umbers and soft shadowing place it in the late Victorian to early Edwardian taste, in the spirit of social realist subjects that balanced tenderness with real life. Oil on canvas in a period gilt frame with shell cresting. The reverse carries an old label for J. Wetherell, Picture Restorer, Gilder and Frame Maker, 32 Basinghall Street, Leeds, which supports a UK origin. The lower right bears an early signature that appears to read T. H… with a 1915 date.
Condition:
Oil on canvas with visible paint loss and scattered flaking, most notably in the upper left field and around the figure’s hat and shirt. Small surface abrasion and a pin depression near the top center. Light grime and stretcher bar shadow at the right edge. Canvas slightly slack but seated. Frame shows age-typical nicks and small gesso losses. Old Leeds restorer label intact on the back. Stable for display and a good candidate for professional consolidation, clean, and in painting if desired.
