A small hinged box in tortoiseshell veneer with a red felt lined interior and a simple hook clasp. I'd put it on a dresser or desk for rings, cufflinks or loose treasures. Boxes like this were a Victorian staple, and this one has been used and handled for well over a century. The veneer has taken real losses, and I've described each one below.

The veneer has lost a good deal of material. There are chips and losses at the corners and along the edges of the lid and body, and in several places the pale wood beneath is exposed. A section of veneer on the front has lifted and cracked, and there are cracks to the edge of the lid. The shell that remains is intact and retains its mottled colouring.

The interior wood is scuffed and shows small nail holes. The red felt lining is worn in places but complete, and the metal binding at the rim is present. The hinges are rusted and the hook clasp is in place and functions. The base is plain wood with pencil marks and a red mark, and shows age and handling.

These losses are consistent with age and use, but they are significant and visible, and the price reflects that. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
