There is a particular kind of American parlor object that managed to be both entirely functional and entirely showy at the same time, and this is one of them. Cast in heavy brass with a reeded barley-twist column rising from an ornately scrolled acanthus base, the stand carries a round white marble top in a pierced brass gallery ring — the marble itself beautifully veined in gray and warm gold, polished to an even surface. It is a small piece, at twenty inches, and a confident one. The Aesthetic Movement vocabulary in the casting — the scrollwork, the finial knop, the foliate base — places this firmly in the 1880s parlor tradition. The brass has developed a warm, unlacquered patina over the decades. It sits squarely and solidly, the kind of thing that looks equally right beside an armchair, under a window, or as a small sculpture pedestal.

Condition

The brass has a warm, genuine patina throughout — no lacquer applied, no polishing to false brightness. There is a small chip to the brass gallery rim where it meets the marble edge, visible on close inspection; it is cosmetic and does not affect the structural integrity of the piece or the stability of the marble top. The marble surface is sound with no cracks; there is some light natural mineral staining inherent to the stone rather than surface damage. The stand sits level and stable.
