A beautifully hand-carved late 19th century Tramp Art sewing box featuring intricate chip-carved detailing and original paper lining. Crafted from layered wood, each notched edge was cut and stacked by hand, creating the distinctive textured pattern that defines Tramp Art. The hinged lid opens to reveal a mirror and a padded pincushion top, while four small drawers with brass pulls provide charming storage for jewelry, sewing notions, or keepsakes.
The interior is lined with period-appropriate printed paper, now beautifully aged, showing wear consistent with use over more than a century. The craftsmanship speaks to the ingenuity of folk artisans of the era who transformed simple cigar and fruit crate wood into ornate, architectural forms. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece of Americana that tells a story of resourcefulness and creativity.
Condition:
Shows age-appropriate wear including surface scuffs, minor chipping, and paper loss to the base lining. Missing key and portions of the original fabric lining. The mirror and interior paper appear original, showing expected discoloration and wear consistent with use. Structurally solid and displays beautifully.
