This Victorian stationery box carries a paper label for Mansfield of Grafton Street, Dublin, and it still works exactly as it was built to. Press the lever lock and the lid springs open on its own, revealing a leather bound correspondence index with alphabetical tabs for organizing names and addresses. The rosewood case is dressed in pierced brass strapwork with a gothic quatrefoil motif, and the original key still turns.

Condition

Antique condition consistent with age and use. The rosewood veneer shows chips and small losses at the base edges and corners, revealing the wood beneath, along with light scuffing and scattered surface marks across the case. The brass mounts carry a mellow, uncleaned patina with soft wear to the engraving, not polished bright.

The correspondence index inside shows real wear. Its blue binding is heavily worn, cracked, and flaking along the spine and fore edges, with losses exposing the boards beneath. The alphabetical index tabs are present and legible. The ruled pages are blank and lightly toned with age.

The lever lock and spring opening mechanism both work, and the original key is present. The key hangs from a cord and tassel that looks notably newer than the box and is likely a later replacement rather than an original fitting.
