Antique Signed Sheep Oil Painting, Shepherd and Flock

A shepherd drives his flock down a wet track past a thatched cottage, a black and white dog holding the rear while a single pale lamb steps into the light at the front of the line. Bare autumn trees fade into a soft, misty grey, and the whole scene sits in the low silver light of a damp morning. The handling is loose and confident, the flock built up in thick, quick strokes of cream and brown against the churned mud of the lane. It is a Continental pastoral in the Hague School manner, signed lower left, Henry Schouten.
The painting is on an unlined canvas over a keyed wooden stretcher, with the keys present. The paint surface is stable, with fine craquelure in the darker passages consistent with age. There is an old repaired tear in the canvas, visible from the reverse as a patch, with associated retouching to the front in that area. The signature is clear and legible in the lower left. There is a warm surface tone that may be varnish discoloration. I have not cleaned the work and cannot confirm from examination whether it has been previously cleaned or otherwise restored beyond the tear repair noted, so I am not making a claim either way. There are faint inscriptions or a stencil on the reverse of the canvas that I am not able to read with confidence.
The frame is a substantial gilt gesso design with cast foliate and anthemion ornament. It carries losses to the gesso at several corners and along the top edge, with the underlying substrate exposed in places, as shown in the photographs. The frame reads as older and may be original to the work, but I cannot confirm that, so it is offered as a period appropriate frame rather than a documented original.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
Furniture is the exception. Because of size and weight, furniture shipping is quoted separately rather than calculated at checkout. Send a DM on Instagram or email austynmariedesign@gmail.com for a quote, or arrange your own shipping from the warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
