The prize label on the front pastedown says this book was awarded to William Jenkinson for improved attendance, Session 1902-03, Standard III. Not scholarship. Not conduct. He started turning up, and the Edinburgh School Board handed him a life of the Queen who had died two years earlier. The binding is why I bought it: olive green cloth blocked in red and navy with the royal arms, the lion and unicorn, Dieu et mon droit, and an inset portrait of Victoria at the center. David Campbell wrote it in 1901, the year she died, a year after his life of Hector Macdonald.
The cloth is worn with age. Rubbing across both boards, wear to the spine ends and corners, and softening to the blocked areas, though the design still reads clearly and the color holds well. Top edge is not gilt. The binding is a little loose but everything remains connected, with no detached sections and no shaken text block.
Internally there is foxing and tanning throughout, heaviest on the endpapers, prelims, and contents leaves, with scattered spotting continuing into the text. Some offsetting where the endpapers meet the boards. The type remains clean and fully legible on every page examined, and all 15 plates are present.
The prize label is intact, well adhered, and entirely legible, including the headmaster's ink signature. There is a small area of surface abrasion at the lower right of the label beside the Standard line, roughly the size of a fingernail, where something was rubbed or lifted away. It does not touch the recipient's name, the award reason, the session dates, or the signature.

We describe the condition of each piece as accurately as possible in the listing. If you have specific questions about a piece before purchasing, please reach out. We are always happy to provide additional photos or details.
Colors may appear slightly different on screen due to monitor settings and photography lighting. We do our best to represent each item accurately.
Descriptions, dates, attributions, materials, and measurements are provided in good faith and reflect our best assessment based on research, physical examination, and the information available to us. Antique and vintage pieces often carry incomplete or unverifiable histories. Where a detail is an assessment rather than a confirmed fact, it is identified as such. Measurements are approximate.
