The binding is the story here. Blind-tooled Gothic Revival panels front and back, deep and crisp, with a red morocco spine label and gilt grape-leaf tooling between raised bands. Inside, the marbled endpapers and red-stained edges show the same care. The text is Karl Friedrich Hermann's handbook of ancient Greek political institutions, this being the first English edition, printed at Oxford by Talboys in 1836 and translated from the German original of 1831. A presentation inscription on the front endpaper carries the best wishes of one schoolboy to another on his leaving, dated Election 1864, the term Winchester and Eton both used for their leaving cycle. The names are present but written in a hand I would not transcribe with confidence, so I have left them as read.
The full leather binding is solid and the blind tooling remains crisp and legible across both boards. There is scuffing and darkening to the leather consistent with age, with wear to the corners and the head and tail of the spine. The red morocco spine label is intact and the gilt tooling between the raised bands survives, with some loss typical of the period. Internally the text block is tight. The endpapers and early leaves show scattered foxing and light staining, heavier around the inscription, and the presentation inscription itself is legible in part though not fully. The marbled endpapers are bright and the red edges retain good color. A handsome and structurally sound copy that displays very well.
