A crowd of ladies in wide sleeves and gentlemen in tall hats gathers beneath the carved arch of the Lincoln Cathedral porch, small figures that give the architecture its scale. Thomas Allom drew the view for Fisher's series of English county views, and E. Challis cut the plate in steel, a hard metal that holds fine line, visible here in the tracery above the doorway.

School or Movement
British topographical illustration. In the early 19th century, publishers such as Fisher sold county-by-county books of engraved views of towns, castles and cathedrals, drawn by artists like Allom and cut onto steel plates. Steel wore down far more slowly than copper, so a plate could print thousands of crisp impressions. The books fed a public eager for picturesque views of England.
Notes
The plate belongs to Fisher, Son & Co.'s county series after Allom, covering Chester, Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Rutland and Lincoln, published 1836 to 1837. The same plate also appears in other Fisher publications, so this impression could date from the series itself or from a later issue.
Inscription
A pencil inscription on the backing board, in an unidentified hand, reads "Original Thomas Allom steel engraving, c. 1836, Cathedral south entrance."

Antique condition consistent with age. The engraving itself is crisp, with clean, even line work across the architecture and figures. The paper shows foxing along the edges. The print remains in its mat and frame, so the margins outside the mat window and the reverse of the sheet are not described here.

The mat is cream with ruled lines and a gold-toned inner bevel. The gilt frame shows minor rubbing and small losses to the gilding at the corners and edges, consistent with age. The backing is pressed board with gummed paper tape along the edges and a wire hanger with two screw eyes. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
