Three volumes of Charles MacFarlane's Cabinet History of England, gathered into a single half calf book with marbled boards and matching marbled edges. The spine carries a gilt morocco label and blind tooling across the compartments, and each volume opens with its own engraved title page showing a seated king flanked by allegorical figures. Published by Charles Knight in London, part of the affordable illustrated history series Knight built his name on. The reign of George II runs through these pages. It reads as what it is, a handsome small format leather book with genuine age on it, the kind that fills a shelf with warmth rather than sitting behind glass.
The binding is solid and the text block firm. The leather shows honest wear consistent with age, with rubbing to the spine and extremities, scuffing and small losses to the calf, and light wear to the marbled boards. The gilt spine label remains legible. Internally the pages are clean and bright with light scattered foxing and toning typical of paper from this period. All three engraved and printed title pages are present. A sound, attractive volume that displays well.
