Antique French windmill landscape oil painting, a post mill set on high dune ground above a walled town, sails caught mid-turn under a wide weather-filled sky. The painting carries a cursive dedication and a signature dated 1879 at the lower center, given as a personal gift that year. It is worked on a prepared Paris panel stamped Tachet on the reverse, and the hand is a trained one: the sky is built in confident broken strokes and the plain recedes with real atmospheric control toward a distant tree line and water. The subject sits in the French naturalist current that runs out of Barbizon, the windmill a standing emblem of worked rural land.

Condition

The painting is on a stable wood panel with a horizontal age crack running across the upper third, consistent with age and not a structural concern in hand. The surface carries an even craquelure throughout and a layer of grime and settled varnish that mutes the palette. Scattered small surface flecks are visible in the sky. I have not had the surface examined for retouch, so I make no claim either way there. The dedication and signature at lower center are original to the surface and dated 1879.

The frame is a period gilt gesso frame with two orders of carved ornament over a wood base. It shows real losses: chipped and missing composition at several corners exposing white ground and bare wood, open corner joint separations along the liner, and rubbing to the gilding. The frame is sold as shown, period to the work in character but with the condition noted.
