A 19th-century French self-portrait study, the canvas inscribed on the verso "Portrait de Mlle de Matagoval, par elle-même" — by herself. The sitter painted her own likeness in the academic tradition of the mid-1800s, positioning herself in three-quarter view against a loose outdoor ground of teal foliage and warm sunset sky, a red rose tucked at her chest, a turquoise ribbon threaded through her dark braided hair. The quality of the face — its smooth, confident modeling and the care given to the eyes — speaks to real training. The background is handled broadly and freely, the way an academic painter sketched what didn't matter in order to concentrate on what did.
The canvas is in good stable condition overall. Natural craquelure is present across the face and hair, consistent with age and entirely undisturbing. The paint layer is almost completely stable with no active lifting. There is a small area of minimal paint loss at a dent in the upper right corner of the canvas surface, likely caused by impact at some point in the painting's history. A period repair patch is present on the verso, evidence of earlier conservation. The frame retains its original gilding with honest age-appropriate wear; the ornament is intact across all four sides.
