I acquired this French jardinière for tabletop display, a serpentine bombé case veneered in rich burl with boxwood line inlay and dressed in gilt metal mounts. The shape is the reason to look twice. The undulating serpentine walls and canted corners give it real presence at only sixteen inches wide, and the mounts are a full set: a pierced gallery around the top, lyre-form mounts at the corners, scrolled handles at the ends, and shell feet. It holds a removable metal liner, so it works as intended for flowers or a potted plant.
This jardinière is in good antique condition with honest wear consistent with age. The veneered case is sound, with the burl panels and boxwood stringing intact and no significant losses to the veneer across the exterior. Expect light lifting or minor chips to veneer edges in places, normal for a piece of this age. The gilt metal mounts are all present, including the pierced gallery, the lyre corner mounts, the scrolled end handles, and the shell feet. The mounts have been cleaned at some point and show wear to the high points with verdigris in the recesses. I have described them as gilt metal rather than fire-gilt ormolu because I cannot confirm the gilding method. The removable metal liner is a later replacement, not original to the piece, which is common for these jardinières since the original liners rarely survive. The liner is painted green, shows age, wear, scratching, and surface losses, and held water when tested. For live planting I would still use a plastic insert as a precaution against long-term moisture. The ebonized base molding shows minor rubbing. No maker's mark, stamp, or label is present.

All antique and vintage items are shipped from our warehouse in Bluffdale, Utah. Each piece is carefully packed by hand using archival materials and custom crating when necessary.
Shipping costs are calculated at checkout based on the size and weight of the item. Local pickup is available at the AMD Warehouse.
All sales of antique and vintage items are final due to their unique, one-of-a-kind nature. Illuminé candles and The Collector's Guide may be returned within 14 days of delivery if unopened and in original condition.
If your piece arrives damaged, please photograph the damage immediately (including packaging), contact us within 48 hours at austynmariedesign@gmail.com, and do not discard any packaging.
