A quiet autumn wood at the close of day, the trees gone to rust and copper, and set back among them a pale stuccoed house catching the last of the light. The scene is built in the Barbizon manner: warm russet and ochre foliage worked up in loose, broken strokes against a soft blue-green sky, with a low footbridge crossing the water in the foreground. Continental European, most likely French, and unsigned, which is usual for decorative woodland studies of this kind. It comes in its original carved and gilded frame.
The painting carries a discolored varnish overall, warming the surface and deepening the shadows, and shows fine craquelure throughout consistent with age. There are light abrasions across the surface, most noticeable toward the edges, and a small area of paint loss at the right edge. The image is otherwise stable and reads clearly, with the lit house and the foreground bridge well preserved.
The frame is carved and gilded wood with genuine wear, including gesso losses and rubbing to the gilding at the corners. Historic woodworm damage is present in the frame and has been treated; the frame is now pest-free. The backing board carries an old inventory marking, "No 22," in blue pencil.
