In the darker passages the crack runs right through the background, and the fritillary at the front hangs its head the way that flower always does in these bouquets, half spent while the roses are still full. This is a floral still life in oil, built on the old Dutch and Flemish flower-piece formula: a mixed bouquet on a stone ledge against a deep brown ground, roses and a broken parrot tulip at the center, a white lily, grapes and currants spilling toward the front edge. Unsigned, which is usual for decorative flower pieces of this kind. It comes in a substantial gilt composition frame with a leaf-and-berry outer molding.
The canvas carries age craquelure throughout, heaviest in the dark background and the black foreground edge, which is normal for a work of this age and palette. A prominent diagonal crack runs through the upper left background and is visible in the photographs. There is rubbing to the paint at the edges where the frame has contacted the canvas, and impression lines are visible where the stretcher bars sit behind the canvas. The canvas has loosened on the stretcher over time. I have not relined or restored the work, and I am describing what is visibly present rather than what may lie beneath the surface.
The frame is gilt composition over wood, with an ornate leaf-and-berry outer molding. It carries scattered losses to the composition ornament and wear to the gilding, consistent with age. It is a period-appropriate frame and presents well from a viewing distance.
