A man sits reading to a woman in a rose silk gown, her plumed hat tilted and a knowing look on her face, while children gather at her side and silver dishes of fruit rest on the ground before them. The setting is a wooded parkland opening to bright sky, a dark rocky mass rising behind. This is a fête galante, the elegant outdoor gathering of conversation, reading, and leisure that French painting made its own in the 18th century, in the tradition of Watteau and his followers. Oil on canvas, unsigned, in a heavy carved and gilded frame.
The painting carries a wide network of craquelure across the entire surface, with cupping in the darker passages where the paint has lifted slightly at the edges of the cracks. This is consistent with an unlined oil on canvas of age that has dried and moved over time. The varnish has discolored and darkened, which deepens the shadows and warms the overall tone. The canvas is unlined and remains on what appears to be its keyed wooden stretcher. There is a small patch repair on the reverse of the canvas, near the center, addressing a weak point or old hole in the fabric; please factor this in. The frame is carved and gilded, with a separation at the upper right corner joint, gesso losses at that corner, rubbing to the gilt throughout, and wear along the edges. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
