A Victorian table box with a gilt brass lid set with five banded agate cabochons in black, white, and russet, each in a bezel with a twisted wire collar. The body is black leather over wood, and the base and walls are lined in royal blue moiré. Offered as attributed to Howell James & Co. of Regent Street, London. It sits low on a dresser, desk, or console, and a key is included. The agates are the draw, and the lid has the soft wear that comes from long handling.

The brass lid shows light scratching, soft tarnish, and some mottling to the gilding, with all five agate cabochons intact and securely set in their rope-twist bezels. The leather covering the body has been re-adhered along the sides where it had begun to lift, and now lies flat. It still shows rubbing and scuffing, and there are small losses at the upper rim and in the corners, where the wood shows through. The stepped leather base molding has fine cracks and splits, most visible at the corner joints. The blue watered silk lining is complete and a good color, with several short splits across the floor of the box. A key is included, hung on a silk tassel. Overall this is honest antique condition, with the wear you would expect from a box of this age and a stable, ready-to-use structure.
