A matched set of four hand-coloured engravings depicting the foundational disciplines of classical English horsemanship — Trot, Road Riding, Passage, and Leaping. Two plates show a female rider sidesaddle, two show a male rider astride, and together they present a complete picture of educated riding as it was practiced and admired in Victorian England. The hand-colouring is selective and confident: warm chestnut and bay horses against lightly tinted grounds, dark habits and tailcoats, the kind of restrained palette that reads as sophisticated rather than decorative. Sourced in England and presented in matching frames stained black, these hang as a cohesive set.

Condition

The prints are in good antique condition consistent with their age. The paper has toned to a warm ivory buff across all four, which is expected and appropriate for engravings of this period. The hand-colouring is intact with no visible fading or losses to the colour. There are no tears, foxing spots, or water damage visible in the image areas. Some light toning and age wear is present in the margins. The prints were reframed at some point — the current frames carry a mid-20th century American framer's label on the verso — and have been presented in matching black wood frames. The glass is intact on all four. Overall a clean, presentable set with honest age and no condition issues that affect display.
