A storm sky presses down over an open meadow, the light breaking low and pale along the horizon while scattered trees bend under a wind you can almost feel. The paint is worked thin and tonal, built up in muted grays, ochres, and greens, with small strokes of wildflower color scattered through the foreground grass. Oil on board, bearing an illegible signature at the lower right. The palette and handling place it in the Continental tonalist tradition, the kind of quiet, weather-driven landscape that carried through French and Northern European painting into the early twentieth century.
The painting carries a heavy layer of surface grime and darkening overall, consistent with age and no recent cleaning. Scattered small specks and flecks sit across the surface, most visible in the sky. There is some abrasion and thinning in the field of the meadow, with a few small spots that read as minor paint loss in the lower portion. The signature at lower right is present but abraded and illegible. I have not cleaned or intervened on the surface, and I am describing it as it sits in hand.
The frame is an ornate gilt composition frame with a laurel-and-ribbon outer molding and beaded and egg-and-dart inner courses. It shows composition losses and cracking in several places, most notably at the corners and along the raised ornament, along with scattered gilt wear. It presents well as a period frame with honest age.
The verso shows a mahogany-toned board with later hanging hardware and felt bumpers at the corners. Faint stamps or marks are present on the reverse but are not legible.
