A cast iron doorstop in the form of a heraldic lion sejant erect, seated on its haunches with body upright and forepaws raised to hold a scrolled cartouche. The pose comes straight from British heraldry and reads as authority, which is why lions like this guarded so many Victorian entrance halls. This is a large, heavy example at over 13 pounds, English, unmarked, and dating to the late Victorian period around 1880. The original black paint has weathered down to bare grey iron across the high points, the kind of honest surface that is hard to fake and easy to love.

Condition

The doorstop is in good, honest antique condition. The original black paint has weathered heavily and worn through to bare grey iron across the raised areas of the mane, face, body, and plinth, with a soft grey surface bloom overall. There is dry surface oxidation and light rust throughout, consistent with age, with no active or flaking rust. The casting is crisp and complete. The mane, facial detail, scrolled cartouche, and the raised scrollwork on the front of the plinth are all fully intact, with no cracks, breaks, or losses. The hollow back is sound with clean edges. The piece stands flat and stable on its own. The wear is age-appropriate and adds to the character of the piece.
