Cattle rest in a lakeside pasture below blue mountains, a recumbent piebald cow holding the foreground while the herd grazes toward the water and a single sail crosses the distance. The work sits squarely in the British Romantic landscape tradition, the picturesque loch view with cattle that descends from Dutch Italianate pastoral and ran through Victorian taste for Highland scenery. The sky and the still middle-distance water are handled with real assurance. It comes in a substantial carved and gilded Rococo Revival frame with shell and cartouche corners.
The painting has been relined onto a plain-weave lining canvas over a keyed wooden stretcher, so the original reverse and anything it carried is no longer accessible. Fine net craquelure runs throughout the sky, consistent with a 19th century oil. There is a crack through the sky near the top center. The upper left sky shows an area of paint loss and lifting where the ground is visible, and there are scattered small losses in the lower left foreground. There is a tear in the lower left corner of the canvas. Multiple restoration areas are visible across the surface. I have not had the surface examined beyond visual inspection and in-hand observation, and I recommend confirming the extent of the restoration and the stability of the sky loss in person.
The frame is a substantial carved and gilded gesso frame in the Rococo Revival manner, with shell and cartouche corners and centers over a cross-hatched ground. The carving and gesso are intact; it shows gilding loss and rub to the high points, consistent with age.
