Four hand colored lithographs of flowering plants by Samuel Holden, the London botanical artist and lithographer, each drawn and lithographed by his hand and captioned in engraved script: Viscaria oculata, Salvia linarioides, Chironia floribunda, and Campanula sylvatica. Holden worked for Sir Joseph Paxton's Magazine of Botany through the 1830s and 1840s, and these carry his "S. Holden, del & Lith" credit in the plate. The blues have held their freshness, and the four sit together in matching black and gilt frames as a single wall grouping.
The four sheets show light toning and scattered foxing consistent with age, most noticeable in the margins and heaviest on the Viscaria oculata plate, which carries some spotting and light staining in the lower area. The hand coloring remains fresh across all four, with the blues especially well preserved. The frames are later black and gilt moulding and show scuffing and rubbing to the gilt along edges and corners throughout, in keeping with age and handling. Backing is kraft paper with wire hangers; one plate is numbered in pencil on the verso. The plates are framed and were not examined outside their frames, so the sheet and image dimensions and the condition of the sheet edges beneath the mats are not recorded here. Please review all photographs closely, as they form part of this description.
