Condition

The print is in good antique condition consistent with its age. The hand coloring is even and intact across all five animal subjects, with the warm auburn of the St. Bernard's Mastiff and the greens of the ground remaining clear and unfaded in the photographs. The paper shows general toning across the margin area outside the image border, which is typical for paper of this period and is visible in the photographs as the warm buff tone of the outer mat area. The image itself appears clean within the ruled border. The mat is a wide white paper mat with a narrow warm inner mat and hand-ruled red and black border lines, presenting the print in an appropriate period manner. The gilt wood frame shows wear consistent with age including light scratching and gesso losses at the corners, most visible at the upper left and upper right corners in the photographs. There is a patch of paint loss or surface damage on the lower frame rail showing the red bole beneath the gilding. The frame is structurally sound. The work is glazed. Offered as found in the framed and matted state; the print has not been examined outside the mat.
