A winged angel with a spray of white lilies looks up out of a dark ground, ringed by roses, a flame-striped tulip, morning glory and carnation. The lilies are the sign Gabriel carries in Annunciation scenes. Garland paintings began in Antwerp around 1607, and the flowers were often the real subject, painted as an offering around a sacred figure. Unattributed, offered in the Flemish garland tradition. The dark ground makes the blooms glow.

School or Movement
Baroque garland painting. A devotional genre that began in Antwerp in the early 1600s, in which a wreath of painted flowers frames a sacred image. Often a flower specialist painted the garland and a figure painter the centre. The dark grounds and strong contrast are typical of the Baroque, and they make the flowers seem to glow.
Support
Canvas, relined, on stretchers

Antique condition consistent with age. There is pronounced craquelure across the whole surface, most visible in the dark background and the thicker white and pink passages of the flowers. The canvas is intact, with no holes, tears or punctures. There is abrasion through the dark ground, small areas of paint loss, and some discolouration of the varnish. Small areas of earlier restoration are present and show under ultraviolet light.

The canvas has been relined, which has stabilized it against further age-related movement. It also means the reverse of the original canvas is no longer visible, along with any labels or marks it may have carried.

The frame shows wear consistent with its age, including rubbing and small losses to the gilding at the corners and edges, with red bole showing through in places. The hanging wire, D-ring hangers and metal securing clips on the reverse were added by us to hold the painting firmly in its frame. They are not original to the piece.
