A classic early 20th-century still life, featuring a brown earthenware jar, citrus fruit (lemon/orange), a book, and a cluster of grapes or violets. These motifs were very popular in late 19th–early 20th century academic still life painting, symbolizing knowledge (the book), nourishment (fruit), and domestic life (jar/vessel).
Clearly monogrammed “K.E.” in red with the date 1905 (possibly 1909) beneath. Monogram signatures were common in continental Europe (particularly German, Scandinavian, and Nordic painters).
Style & Technique:
Painted in a naturalistic but dark-ground tradition, strong contrasts, with a chiaroscuro influence echoing 17th-century Dutch still lifes, revived by academic schools in the late 1800s. The brushwork is careful and precise, with realistic modeling of fruit textures and reflective surfaces.
Condition:
The painting is in good condition for its age, with a naturally aged surface showing scattered craquelure and light wear consistent with its date of 1905. The colors remain strong, particularly in the citrus fruit and earthenware jar, though there is expected darkening of the background from varnish aging. The canvas is securely stretched on its original wooden stretcher, with no evidence of relining. The gilt frame is later and shows minor scuffs and corner wear but complements the artwork well and remains structurally sound. Overall, the piece is stable and displays beautifully.
