This copy of In Search of Scotland by H.V. Morton is the nineteenth edition, published in 1933 by Methuen & Co. in London. Following the success of In Search of England, Morton turned his pen to Scotland, weaving a lyrical journey through its towns, glens, and remote isles. His writing captures not only the landscape but the atmosphere—rich with folklore, history, and the resilient character of the Scottish people. Morton’s style is intimate and observant, blending journalism with romanticism, making his work as much about cultural soul-searching as geographical exploration. This edition includes 16 illustrations and a fold-out map, designed to bring the reader along on the journey in a time before mass tourism.
Bound in burgundy cloth with a gilt thistle emblem on the front board and gilt titling on the spine, the book presents a refined yet distinctly Scottish aesthetic. The spine has faded from sun exposure, and the gilt has dulled with age but remains visible. The boards show some light wear, especially to the edges and corners, and the back board has small marks and faint water spotting.
Condition:
Inside, the binding is sound and the pages turn easily. There is uniform toning throughout, a warm patina typical of books from the early 20th century. Scattered foxing is present, particularly on the preliminaries and title pages, with some light spotting in the margins. These signs of age don’t detract from readability but instead lend the book a pleasing, timeworn quality. Overall, it’s a well-kept and characterful example of Morton’s celebrated work, full of charm and literary wanderlust.
