This illustrated edition of Hawbuck Grange by R.S. Surtees is a standout example of English sporting literature, beautifully bound in deep red half morocco leather with gilt-stamped hunting motifs along the spine including a fox, horse, and horn. Originally published in 1847, this later subscriber edition was printed in London and features hand-colored illustrations by the celebrated artists H.K. Browne (Phiz) and W.T. Maud. The story follows the comic adventures of Thomas Scott, a gentleman navigating the eccentric world of fox hunting and rural society. Surtees, known for his satirical wit and keen eye for social quirks, brings this world to life with humor and vivid detail. The book was produced for private subscribers only, making it more exclusive than typical mass-market editions. Whether displayed in a hunting lodge, styled into a layered library shelf, or added to a collection of fine bindings, this book offers both visual charm and literary value.
Condition:
This volume is in very good antique condition. The half leather binding is strong and shows only light wear at the corners and edges. The gilt hunting decorations on the spine remain crisp and bright. The red cloth boards are clean with only minor surface markings. The top edge is gilt and the marbled endpapers are intact. Internally, the pages are clean with light age toning, and the hand-colored illustrations are vivid and free from foxing. The binding is tight and the hinges are secure, making this a well-preserved and highly decorative example of late Victorian bookmaking.
