Written In English

Published in 1902 by John F. Shaw and Co. in London, Britain’s King and Queen: The Story of Their Lives by Thomas Paul is a richly illustrated biography that offers a deeply humanizing portrait of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Written in the wake of Queen Victoria’s death and Edward’s coronation, the book was intended to satisfy a widespread public curiosity about the new sovereigns. With Queen Victoria’s long reign having cast a dominant shadow over British life, this transition brought renewed interest in the monarchy’s future. Paul’s narrative traces the lives of Edward and Alexandra from childhood through their royal duties, marriage, travels, and personal endeavors. Each chapter is crafted to build a narrative that is both accessible and reverent—part patriotic tribute, part historical chronicle. It includes insights into their personalities, their influence on British society, and their roles in the broader context of empire and diplomacy. Beyond the compelling content, this particular copy is a visual standout. Bound in a striking royal blue cloth with ornate gilt detailing and embossed Art Nouveau floral motifs, it reflects Edwardian pride and elegance. An additional feature is the beautifully designed prize bookplate dated July 1904, adorned with gold and lavender hues, indicating it was awarded as a school prize—offering an extra layer of provenance and charm.

Condition:

This copy is in very good condition overall. The blue cloth binding remains vivid, with bright gilt titling and decoration that’s only lightly worn along the edges and spine tips. The spine is square and the hinges are sound, with the interior showing some expected age toning and occasional foxing, mostly to the endpapers. The text is clean and legible throughout, and the photographic plates and frontispiece are well preserved. The decorative bookplate adds a unique historical touch, connecting the book to the Edwardian educational tradition and making this a particularly attractive and collectible
