A stipple engraving is a type of printmaking technique where an image is created using tiny dots instead of lines. Engravers use a tool to carefully dot the surface of a metal plate, creating different shades and textures by varying the density of the dots. The closer the dots are, the darker the area appears; the farther apart, the lighter it looks.
This method became popular in the 18th century, especially for portrait prints, because it allowed for soft, delicate shading that mimicked the look of drawings or paintings. It was often used to reproduce artwork, making fine details and smooth transitions possible in black-and-white prints.

A stipple engraving by John Raphael Smith (1751-1812) after George Morland (1763-1804), Plate 1 from the 'Laetitia' series. Presented in a white painted mount and a black lacquer wooden frame with a tin gilt-effect bead course to the inner edge and tin gilt-effect lozenge moulding to the outer edge. Inscribed with the title in plate to the lower edge, other information obscured by the mount. There is an identical impression in the collection of the British Museum. There is a label verso inscribed with details about the engraving. On wove.
Condition:
The substrate displays a slight cockling texture with several open and closed tears at the center and bottom edge. All the engravings have tanning and foxing to them. The frames exhibits minor scuffs and marks.
