hume-brown-history-scotland-1909
Antique Hume Brown History of Scotland 1909 Three Volume Set

Brown held the position of Historiographer-Royal for Scotland and the Fraser Chair at Edinburgh, making him the senior figure in Scottish historical scholarship at the time of publication. Cambridge University Press issued the work as part of their Historical Series, a peer-reviewed sequence that placed Scottish history alongside France, Rome, and Germany as subjects worthy of the same rigorous treatment. The coverage runs from pre-Roman Scotland through the Disruption of 1843, and Volume I includes seven folded maps printed in two colors, a detail that rewards the reader who actually opens these books. An early reprint set, circa 1905-1909, in a binding that displays beautifully as a group.

[d]Author | P. The leather spines and corners show age-appropriate wear, with the tan leather having aged to slightly different tones across the set, Volume I warmer and more ochre, Volumes II and III showing greater green patination. Raised bands are intact. Gilt spine lettering remains legible on all three volumes though with some dulling. The green cloth boards are generally clean with light surface wear and minor fading consistent with age. Text blocks are tight. Pages show toning throughout, as expected for paper of this period, ranging from cream in Vol. I to deeper tan in Vols. II and III. Top edges show light dust soiling. A partially legible pencil ownership inscription appears on the marbled endpaper of one volume; the name is not fully readable. Marbled endpapers are intact and bright. The folded maps in Vol. I appear present; condition of individual map folds not confirmed and should be checked before listing.
