The form is the reason these are sought after. The rim sweeps high at both ends and dips low in the middle, an almond silhouette that distinguishes the navette type from the more common plain cylindrical peat buckets of the same period. Solid coopered mahogany staves are locked together by wide brass bands at the rim and foot, with paired narrower bands at the center. The liner lifts out, which makes the bucket useful as a planter, log holder, or umbrella stand.

[d]Type | Peat Bucket

[d]Form | Navette

[d]Material | Mahogany with brass bands, brass liner, brass swing handle

[d]Origin | England

[d]Age | Mid 19th Century

[d]Style | Georgian / Regency taste, English Victorian production

[d]Size | 12.5 in H x 14 in W x 10.5 in D

[d]Liner | Removable brass liner, 7 in H x 12.5 in W x 9 in D

[d]Hardware | Original brass handle, mounts, and bands

[condition]

The bucket is in good antique condition with honest age-appropriate wear. The mahogany retains a rich color and pleasing patina. The brass bands, escutcheons, and swing handle are all original and intact, with the warm uneven surface that comes from a century or more of use. As expected with a coopered piece of this age, the staves have shrunk slightly over time and the bands have loosened a touch in places, with fine seams visible between several of the staves and one more pronounced split running down the body. The structure is sound. The wood interior shows old dark staining from long use with peat or kindling, primarily across the base and lower walls. The original brass liner is present and removable, with overall oxidation and verdigris consistent with age. The liner has a small hole in one side near the bottom, which does not affect decorative use and would not prevent the bucket from being used as a planter with the right liner or pot insert. Light scuffs and minor surface marks across the exterior consistent with age and use.

https://austyn-marie.myshopify.com/products/english-mahogany-brass-bound-navette-peat-bucket-mid-19th-century
