The binding is warm and well-made, raised bands dividing a gilt-tooled spine into compartments, a roll-tool border gilt to all four edges of both boards, marbled endpapers and edges in the same burnt-orange palette throughout. Inside, the Blackwood 1912 text opens with the poem "Edinburgh After Flodden," the first stanza exactly what you'd want from Victorian narrative verse on Scottish defeat and fire-lit hill signals. The dedication to Archibald William Montgomerie, Earl of Eglinton, is there in full. Six weeks after this copy was presented, Europe was at war.

[d]Author | William Edmondstoune Aytoun
[d]Title | Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers and Other Poems
[d]Publisher | William Blackwood and Sons
[d]Date | 1912
[d]Edition | 1912 Blackwood and Sons edition
[d]Binding | Full tan calf, raised bands, gilt tooled spine and board borders, marbled endpapers and edges
[d]Dimensions | 6.5 in H x 4.25 in W x 1 in D
[d]Inscription | Prize inscription: presented by the Bishop of Guiana, July 25, 1914
[d]Language | English
[d]Origin | United Kingdom

[condition]
The binding is in good to very good condition overall. The calf covers show surface scuffing and light wear consistent with age, most visible on the front board where the leather has some grazing and a few deeper marks. The gilt board border is intact and legible throughout. The spine is sound with the raised bands well-defined; the gilt tooling in the compartments retains good detail, with some wear to the top and bottom compartments. The title label shows some darkening and slight toning but remains readable. The joints are firm. Marbled endpapers and edges are bright and intact. The text block is clean and tight with no foxing visible. The prize inscription is in pencil to the front flyleaf, clear and stable.
